Mazda to Offer Back Up Camera with Auto-Dimming Mirror Display System for Mazda CX-9 Crossover SUV

Having two sets of eyes -- one in the front of their heads and another in the back -- is something people all over the world have longed for since the beginning of time. Now, using a state-of-the-art rearview mirror-mounted liquid crystal display system, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) will be the first automotive company in North America to give SUV owners the ability to clearly see what's happening behind the vehicle without taking their eyes off the road in front of them. The first of its kind to be installed in vehicles in the North American market, this rearview mirror-mounted Back Up Camera with Auto-Dimming Mirror Display will be available on Mazda CX-9 models not factory-equipped with DVD navigation systems -- giving drivers the ability to see the display screen and the rearview mirror simultaneously.

When the vehicle is shifted into reverse, an LCD screen automatically appears within the reflective surface of the mirror, showing a real-time panoramic view of the area at the rear of the vehicle. Once the vehicle is shifted into any other gear, the display disappears.

Using special "transflective" coatings and lighting technology developed by Gentex Corporation, the high-resolution, 2.4-inch diagonal active-matrix video display is housed in an automatic-dimming rearview mirror, which dims in response to headlight glare from trailing vehicles in order to make nighttime driving safer.

"Safety is always a top priority for Mazda and we want all Mazda CX-9 customers to have the added security of a rearview backup camera, regardless of the trim level or option package they select," said Jack Stavana, director, Accessory Operations, MNAO. "The Back Up Camera with Auto-Dimming Mirror Display kit is a great alternative for CX-9 buyers whose vehicles are not equipped with the factory navigation system and its integrated backup camera."

Available as either a dealer-installed or port-installed option, the Back Up Camera with Auto-Dimming Mirror Display kit will include an auto-dimming rearview mirror with display and lift gate-mounted rear camera. Expected availability is early summer 2007, and pricing will start at $665 for a port-installed option or $675 for a dealer-installed option.

Mazda Announces Best-Ever March Sales for North America

- U.S. sales up 47.9 percent; Canada sales up 16.0 percent; Mexico sales up 182.5 percentIRVINE, Calif., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), including the U.S., Canada and Mexico, today reported best-ever March sales of 47,206 vehicles, beating its previous March record of 45,892 set back in 1994. The U.S. celebrated its best March since 1994 with sales of 37,742 while Mazda Canada, Inc. reported its best-ever March with sales of 8,108 units. Not to be outdone by Mazda Motor de Mexico, which reported its best- ever month with sales of 1,356 units.

"The automotive business is a marathon not a sprint and right now we're hitting our stride as we head into the crucial spring selling season," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. "Our record-breaking sales month for North America proves that we're offering the right vehicles at the right price, driving customers into our showrooms in the U.S., Canada and Mexico."

Mazda's U.S. sales were led in volume by its popular MAZDA3, which reported best-ever sales of 15,606, while the sporty MAZDA6 also celebrated its best-ever month with sales of 9,624 units. The all-new Mazda CX-9 seven passenger crossover SUV reported its best month since launch with 2,443 units. The MX-5 Mazda Miata posted its best month since March 1997 with sales of 2,281 units.

Overall calendar-year-to-date sales for the U.S. are up 17.5 percent versus last year, with 79,074 vehicles sold.

"We're thrilled to finish our fiscal year on such a high note, leading to our best March in the U.S. in 13 years," added O'Sullivan. "We can attribute these outstanding results to a few key points: first, the Mazda CX-7 and Mazda CX-9 crossover SUVs are bringing new customers into our dealerships; second, the MAZDA3 continues as our hottest seller, despite minimal incentives and tight inventory; and third, our dealer network is stronger than ever with 673 total dealers of which 52 percent are exclusive."
