State-of-the-art research facility provides acoustic testing solutions and analysis
MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Henkel recently opened its new North American Acoustic Center, which analyzes acoustic material properties of automotive body structure panels to determine their effectiveness in vehicle applications. The acoustic center is the latest addition to Henkel's Automotive Technology Center -- a 65,000 square foot facility that provides research and development support of new Henkel products for OEM customers.
"Our investment of over $1 million in the new acoustic center indicates Henkel's innovation through commitment and dedication to the industry," said Dan Wohletz, vice president, automotive North America, Henkel. "The acoustic center adds credibility to our products and validates their functionality and performance, enabling us to evolve with industry changes and introduce a new generation of products to the market."
The acoustic center provides comprehensive testing of Henkel's individual and combined parts and pumpable acoustic solutions, offering customers performance and economical expertise in acoustics, along with detailed analytical results of their findings to offer optimum NVH solutions. In addition to panel vibration and sound propagation of a typical body structure, the facility conducts evaluations for vibration damping or stiffening body panels using materials loss factor. Additionally, sound transmission loss and absorption is used to measure and optimize body-in-white or component treatments. With a mobile acquisition system available to perform measurements and analysis at customer locations, Henkel is able to offer capabilities beyond the standard in-house Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and lab testing.
"The acoustic center allows us to conduct very detailed, advanced product evaluations," said Mike Lupini, manager, design and acoustics, automotive North America, Henkel. "We are focused on strengthening Henkel's ability to deliver quality solutions and exceed customer expectations."
Providing solutions for both internal and external customers, the acoustic center caters to the transportation industry. The center is staffed by three Henkel engineers, and additional candidates are being evaluated. The North American Acoustic Center is part of Henkel's worldwide network, including resources in Europe and Asia that support customers with global projects.

Henkel to Showcase Automotive Solutions at SAE World Congress
Highlights include technology display, technical papers and revamped Web site
Henkel will display its innovative automotive solutions at the 2007 SAE World Congress, April 16-19, 2007, in Detroit. Technologies include the world's first non-phosphate nanoceramic pretreatment for automotive metals, as well as the latest advances in the company's structural solutions.
"For more than 75 years, Henkel has taken great pride in providing customers with innovative solutions and reduced costs to meet the complex challenges in the automotive industry," said Dan Wohletz, vice president, automotive North America, Henkel. "We are excited to showcase our customized products and solutions that support all segments of the industry."
In booth 1560 at SAE World Congress, Henkel's display includes many of its automotive solutions and advanced technologies, including:
* Bonderite(R) Nanoceramic Pretreatment Technology - the world's first non-phosphate nanoceramic conversion coating process for metals that reduces cost and environmental impact.
* Autophoretic(R) Coating Chemicals - an organic coating process that reduces the number and complexity of stages needed for painting parts, improving the total value and productivity of the manufacturing process while meeting environmental requirements.
* Structural Adhesives - cold-applied and impact-resistant adhesives, designed to absorb energy during impact and channel energy to the body structure to reduce or eliminate failure of the bond seam.
* Structured Solutions - Henkel's Terocore(R), Terophon(R) and Teroson(R) technologies provide complete solutions to address water leakage, structural reinforcement, and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) challenges.
* Integrated Equipment Solutions(TM) - streamlined production achieved by combining custom and standard processes with an innovative dispensing technique to ensure efficient use of a company's chemical portfolio.
* Liquid Gasketing - a broad range of formed-in-place and cured-in-place liquid gaskets available to improve assembly, efficiency, quality and reliability while reducing costs.
Additionally, Henkel will deliver technical sessions in the areas of corrosion prevention and advances in coating technology. Sessions include:
* New Generation Conversion Coatings for the Automotive Industry, Monday, April 16 at 10:00 a.m. - Henkel experts will speak on the transformation of zinc phosphate conversion coatings, environmental restrictions on essential components and byproducts, and advantages of the new generation conversion coatings through performance milestones and environmental cost savings.
* Autodeposition Coatings: How and Why They Perform, Thursday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m. - Henkel experts will deliver information on Henkel's autodeposition process, general chemistry, physical characteristics and corrosion performance.
